The HSE Ceramics Matrix Composite (CMC) Team is looking for an M5 Design Manager to support the CMC Design & Structures Team. This is a technical supervisor position where the selected candidate will supervise up to 5 Design Engineers, potentially including outsourcing support. The selected candidate will report to the CMC Design & Structures Discipline Manager with whom the candidate will coordinate the staffing and execution of CMC sub-element, rig, and component design tasks.
The Design Manager will contribute to Leader’s Intent definition, budget estimation, staff planning, and prioritization of CMC part design tasks. They will embrace the Thayer Leadership principles and help foster the daily use of the AGILE principals amongst multiple IPTs.
What You Will Do:
- Supervise team of CMC Design Engineers to develop new CMC BOAS, Vanes, and Combustor assemblies that meet or exceed program requirements, while ensuring quality of design solutions, program planning, and team execution during all phases of development.
- Facilitation of ESW task tailoring / selection with the IPTs and HSE Chiefs at task initiation, (2) ensuring the rigorous execution of design tasks by their direct reports, (3) ensuring the timely and proper execution of Design Discipline Reviews, and (4) chairing and documenting Design Reviews.
- Working with the CMC Design, Structures & Methods Discipline Manager, Product Definition Manager, and CMC Design Integration Lead to manage Product Definition tasks and resource allocation.
- Provide coaching, technical mentorship, professional development, and performance feedback to Design Engineers on the team.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical engineering, Aerospace engineering.
- A minimum of 10 years gas turbine hardware design experience.
- At least 5 years of demonstrated skill in leading and managing a technical team.
- US Citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain a security clearance required.
- Travel Requirements: 10
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Previous supervisory and IPT leadership experience a plus.
- Experience in CMC hardware development and manufacturing
- Broad understanding of combustor, HPT & LPT module designs and manufacturing
- Experience progressing technology through TRL6 approval and product insertion
- Proven demonstration of risk-based decision-making, analytical skills, and Agile project management principles

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.
For onsite roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.
The salary range for this role is 124,000 USD - 250,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
